Streets of London

Updated: Feb 13, 2018

This is the first in my series of monthly blog posts.

I love street photography, capturing those one off moments, seeing things that pass by most people. London is a brilliant place for street photography and there is nothing better then walking the streets and getting lost. The mix of architecture, culture, people and landscapes all combine to create some contrasting and interesting imagery. One of my future blog posts will showcase my street photography in Rome and Venice, so you can compare the differences and the similarities between these busy cities. I have included some quotes from famous street photographers that have inspired my work.

'There is a certain honesty underground, a certain truth. The sense of enclosure is sometimes oppressive, but I love feeling the pulse beneath the city.' Christophe Agou

'At a time when staged narratives and rendered images are popular, I am excited by the fact that life itself offers situations far more strange and beautiful than anything I could set up.' Melanie Einzig

'The people that I photograph are people who have a certain individuality in the way they walk, the way way they look. But the world is getting smaller and smaller so people are tending to look more alike, dress more alike. All the differences are disappearing, and it's making it tougher to find people to photograph. I believe I'm preserving the differences.' Bruce Gilden

'Everything I need is in the street. I can create a beautiful landscape, a social drama, or a very personal, almost abstract photograph.' Arif Asci

'My pictures are not necessarily pretty, but they do show beautiful moments of urban jungle.' Markus Hartel

'Photographing in public keeps me awake and aware, always looking around, in awe at what humans are up to.' Melanie Einzig

'To see the complexity of life on the street is for me a kind of meditation.' Siegfried Hansen

'Before I was a street photographer, or even a photographer, I was a walker - most native New Yorkers are. I would (and still do) choose to walk the long way home. At some point the camera became a part of the walking' Gus Powell

'Above all, street photography communicates empathy. It shows the elegance, and the occasional absurdities, which inhabit the lives of ordinary people.' David Gibson

'The eye of the passer-by is bluffed at every turn: real and imaginary street scenarios merge'. Frederic Lezmi
